Barry McGee’s work moves between the street and the exhibition room without treating one as a lesser context. SFMOMA documents his introduction to graffiti at eighteen and the tag Twist; YBCA and gallery sources connect the same canonical artist to aliases including Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, P. Kin, Ray Virgil and B. Vernon. Those names belong to one practice, not separate artist identities.
McGee earned a BFA in painting and printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1991. The degree matters less as a boundary than as one strand in a practice that has continued to use drawing, painting, zines, photography, sculpture, ceramics, found objects and large-scale installation. A clustered wall can place hand-drawn faces beside geometric panels, signs and salvaged materials. The relationships among the objects are part of the work: repetition, proximity and shifts of scale turn individual pieces into an environment.
Institutional and gallery descriptions consistently point to the mixture of folk and sign-making traditions, optical pattern, graffiti and assemblage. McGee’s recurring figures and geometric sequences can be instantly recognizable, but the installations resist a single clean format. Bottles, framed drawings, painted panels and architectural interventions can share the same field. That refusal of hierarchy is also why exact work identity matters. A bottle in a glass exhibition, a multi-panel Untitled and an editioned publication should not be flattened into interchangeable “Barry McGee art.”
The 2026 exhibition record demonstrates that range. Bay Area Then carried into January at YBCA. In Los Angeles, 99CENT occupied a former discount store during Frieze week, combining McGee’s work and personal collection with contributions from more than two hundred friends. Berggruen also included him in its Frieze Los Angeles presentation. Virginia MOCA’s Seamless: Art and Design placed him in a design-focused group exhibition where graphic systems, illustration, pattern and signage moved beyond fixed functional briefs.
Glass Class is one exhibition identity with two New York occurrences. The Bowery presentation included an Untitled 2023 gouache on glass bottle; the Tribeca leg showed additional 2026 bottle works. Fraenkel Gallery’s Slice of the Pie and Berggruen’s Summer Highlights extend the year’s group-show baseline. These are exhibition appearances, not proof that every displayed work was publicly released in 2026.
Two future exhibitions were officially announced as of October 11, 2026. Jeffrey Deitch’s Barry McGee: Another Round runs October 30, 2026 through January 30, 2027 in Los Angeles. Beyond the Streets opens at Saatchi Gallery on November 11, 2026 and lists McGee among its featured artists through May 5, 2027. Those upcoming counts are kept separate from the baseline.
The verified 2026 release baseline contains one object: Kinstler’s 1,000-piece puzzle reproducing Untitled, 2022, scheduled for US and Canadian publication on November 17, 2026. Because the publication date is still ahead, the same object belongs to both views of the calendar: one release in the 2026 baseline and one upcoming release, with an overlap of one. V1 Gallery’s ten Untitled screenprints were checked and excluded from the 2026 baseline: their catalogue and the 2025 Nature Inside Me chronology support a 2025 release context.
For collectors, McGee’s catalogue rewards attention to both object and context. A clustered installation, painted bottle, print, publication and puzzle can share motifs without becoming versions of one another. The current 2026 record comprises one scheduled release, seven exhibition identities across eight occurrences and two announced upcoming exhibitions. The puzzle is the single overlap between the baseline and upcoming release counts.
