Handiedan is a Dutch mixed-media artist based in Amsterdam whose work joins elaborate paper construction with digital composition. Figures drawn from historical pin-up imagery inhabit densely ornamented settings, where decorative fragments, geometry and small drawings compete for attention. Her background includes photographic design, followed by commissioned illustration and graphic design; she began working independently as a full-time artist in 2007. That progression helps explain a practice in which arranging an image and constructing its physical surface remain closely connected. Artist biography.
Building an image in layers
The process moves between two different kinds of making. Handiedan first composes found imagery on a computer, then reconstructs the design through printed sheets, cutting and layered assembly. Original fragments are incorporated into the paper structure, and pen marks add another register of detail. In her account of the process, the frame is selected as part of the work itself. The resulting object has a relief-like depth that a flat photograph can only partly communicate. Looking at the edges and overlapping surfaces is therefore as useful as recognising the central figure. Studio interview.
Her visual vocabulary includes old currency, stamps, sheet music and playing cards, alongside spirals and other geometric forms. She connects these elements with ideas about time, energy and transformation. The small character Amélie operates as an alter ego within this more intricate world, introducing humour and play alongside the symbolic imagery. Those recurring elements provide a way to follow relationships between works without treating every composition as the same image. About the imagery.
Paper, walls and virtual space
The Fourth Dimension: Time, presented at Jonathan LeVine Projects in 2017, brought her interest in change and the passage of time into a named exhibition. Her outdoor practice also develops the relationship between image and setting: she describes designing a mural for the proportions and character of its building, much as a studio collage belongs with its frame. Exhibition and process.
The gallery records large wheat-paste projects from 2011 onward and a further move into virtual reality in 2017. Handria, made using Tilt Brush, became a three-dimensional environment of collage and drawing presented at Edinburgh's Future Play Festival. These projects extend the spatial questions already present in her layered paper work. Gallery biography.
Understanding the objects
Actiniaria demonstrates another connection between physical and digital work: the 2019 original combines paper, found material and drawing with an augmented-reality component. The artist's edition archive separately documents printed interpretations, including paper and aluminium versions. For a collector, the shared subject is only the starting point. The support, actual hand-applied material and edition designation establish what the object is; a print reproducing a collage does not acquire the original's constructed paper depth.
