Hayley Welsh is a British artist whose paintings and public artworks follow a cast of imagined creatures through encounters with an uncertain world. Recognisable by their large eyes and soft, animal-like forms, these characters carry an emotional range beyond their initially friendly appearance. Humour and tenderness coexist with unease, making the work a space for questions about belonging, courage and the thoughts people rarely say aloud.
A story across different surfaces
In her account of the creatures, Welsh describes them as lost figures searching for a home that may be a place or a state of mind. Each artwork contributes to an unfolding narrative rather than closing the story. A wall, a canvas or a found object can become another setting for the same search. This continuity gives the practice its particular character: the creatures are recurring participants in a larger imagined world, with individual paintings offering moments of reflection within it.
Welsh trained in Scientific and Natural History Illustration at Blackpool and The Fylde College of Art and Design. Her gallery-published CV records a first-class honours degree and exhibitions including Lost Nature Forgotten Art in London, Nest Making in Port Hedland and Little Voices in New York and Blackburn. That background places close observation alongside invention. The fantastical subjects are rendered with attention to their physical presence, while the narrative can remain deliberately open to a viewer's own experiences.
Little voices in public space
The idea of a little voice runs through Welsh's work as a way of attending to intuition and making sense of experience. Her creatures can be read as companions to that interior conversation. Moving them into the street creates a different encounter from a gallery visit: a passer-by meets the image within an ordinary journey, and the surrounding place becomes part of how its message is understood.
Her untitled mural for Whanganui Walls in 2019 makes that relationship explicit. In the artist statement preserved by the Coastal Arts Trail, Welsh connects the work to Whanganui's history and the relationship between people and the river. She describes the search for home through cooperation and a sense of belonging within nature. The mural therefore gives the recurring creatures a specific local context while continuing their wider story.
Never Stop Playing, documented by the City of Perth's visitor site as a 2015 work in Burswood, is another enduring point of reference. Welsh's exhibition and project history also includes Brisbane Street Art Festival, Le MUR in Paris and Blackburn Open Walls. Together these settings show how the same imaginative vocabulary travels between international public projects and more intimate studio work, retaining an invitation to pause, imagine and reconsider one's place in the world.
