Pejac is a Spanish artist from Santander whose practice connects painting, sculpture and interventions in public space. Based in Madrid, he uses visual illusion to make ordinary surroundings behave unexpectedly: a street, a window or a stretch of water becomes part of the image. His work often addresses environmental damage and human vulnerability through an economical arrangement of figures and objects. Avant Arte’s artist profile documents these recurring concerns and his movement between public and studio work.
Place, perspective and public work
Location is an active ingredient in Pejac’s art. His studio biography traces interventions ranging from illusory windows in Istanbul to shoes suspended from London light poles. In Santander, he painted a map of the world appearing to drain into a street sewer. The actual drain completes the image, so the work’s physical setting carries meaning that a detached reproduction cannot fully retain.
The same attention to context runs through Social Distancing, his tribute to healthcare workers at Santander’s Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. Pejac’s studio practice is similarly varied, extending from oil and watercolour to charcoal, scratching, burning and sculpture. A quiet image may therefore involve a demanding material process; the apparent simplicity of its final form does not describe how it was made. Studio background.
His collaboration with the rescue organisation Sea-Watch on Landless Stranded in 2021 places that public practice alongside humanitarian work. Avant Arte also documents images such as Yin and Yang, in which figures, ice and water become a way to change the viewer’s sense of scale. These examples provide useful reference points for reading his recurring relationship between a small human presence and a much larger surrounding world. Selected works and collaborations.
Editions as material translations
Pejac’s edition archive shows that printmaking is a field of technical experimentation within the practice. New Wave combines screenprinting with hand-applied silver leaf; So Far, So Close brings photopolymer printing together with monotype, layered papers and additional drawing. Love Letter adopts the form of an airmail envelope, while Desprestigio places a mixed-media sculpture inside a bottle. The edition is not always a conventional rectangular image on paper.
For collectors, that range makes support and process as revealing as subject. A photopolymer print, a hand-finished screenprint and a sculptural edition offer different encounters with the work, even when they share its restrained imagery. The studio archive and Avant Arte’s collaboration records are complementary references for identifying those distinctions. Edition details belong with the individual object; the broader continuity is Pejac’s use of a precise visual transformation to unsettle something familiar.
