Photo Synthesis

A survey of photography's role in Fairey's evolution from wheat-paste and screen-print practice to digital collage, including work made for the exhibition.

Photo Synthesis at Fotografiska Berlin approached Shepard Fairey's work through photography, a medium whose contribution can be less immediately obvious than the bold shapes and graphic surfaces of the finished images. The museum gives the public exhibition dates as October 17, 2025, through March 8, 2026. Thomas Schäfer curated the presentation in collaboration with Johan Vikner and the artist.

The museum describes a progression from early wheat-paste interventions and screen printing to digital collage, alongside pieces developed for the exhibition. Its premise is not that Fairey abandoned illustration for photography. Rather, it asks viewers to consider the photographic material within an artistic practice that combines several ways of making images. The difference matters: a strongly stylized picture may retain a photographic starting point even when its final appearance no longer resembles a conventional photograph.

The opening program placed that photographic inquiry beside conversation and music. Fairey was announced in discussion with Sven Fortmann of Lodown Magazine, followed by Berlin punk duo CAVA and a DJ set by Fairey at Bar Verōnika. This combination gives a concrete account of how the museum introduced the project: not only as a sequence of images, but through the artist’s account of street culture and his participation in its musical life. It also gives substance to the distinction between opening night and the public exhibition schedule; the extended late-night access belonged to a particular program, rather than establishing the ordinary hours of the months-long show.

This is an especially useful question in a museum devoted to photographic culture. A camera image can supply a recognizable person, an observed gesture, or a particular arrangement of light, while subsequent translation determines which features become emphatic and which disappear. Looking for those transformations changes the viewer's task. Instead of asking only who or what is represented, one can ask how recognition survives the movement between media and what new emphasis that movement creates.

Berlin also requires careful date handling. The artist's opening announcement identifies an October 16 opening party and artist talk; the museum's explicit public run begins the following day. The museum dates distinguish the public presentation from its opening-night program.

Photo Synthesis is a shared touring identity, but the Berlin occurrence is the one included in the 2026 calendar. Earlier Tallinn and Stockholm presentations provide context without becoming additional 2026 stops. The result is a record of one continuing museum presentation, with its own host, dates, and curatorial credits.
