Lil Crazy Legs: photograph, street intervention and print edition

The 2023 Cultprint collaboration connects Martha Cooper’s photograph to Zacharevic’s 2015 REPLAYNYC intervention, with 80 main prints and 20 hand-finished variants.

Cultprint’s Lil Crazy Legs main edition is a 2023 collaboration between Ernest Zacharevic and Martha Cooper. The signed run contains 80 archival pigment prints on 310 gsm Hahnemühle German Etching paper, specified as 100% cellulose, measuring 52×82 cm. The publisher also announced 20 hand-finished variants. The main product currently retains an order option. Exact collaboration listing.

The shared credit matters because the image has a documented life before this print. Cultprint identifies Cooper’s photograph of b-boy Lil Crazy Legs with a boombox as its source. That photograph was made for Charlie Ahearn’s film Wild Style and later appeared on the cover of Cooper’s 2004 book Hip Hop Files. Zacharevic’s interpretation should therefore be catalogued with Cooper’s contribution, rather than presented as an image originating solely with the painter.

Four stages, four different objects

In 2015, Zacharevic painted a rendition at 110 East 7th Street in New York as part of REPLAYNYC, their project returning subjects from Cooper’s photographs to city streets. Cultprint then linked the 2023 edition to an original canvas shown in Lost & Found at B.east Gallery in Florence. The photograph, street intervention, exhibition canvas and edition are related stages, not interchangeable descriptions of one physical work.

That lineage changes what an image match proves. A photograph of the mural can establish the subject and project, but it cannot establish the paper, limitation or condition of a print being offered. A collector examining the 2023 edition needs the 52×82 cm sheet and edition information, while preserving the earlier photograph and street work as image-history references.

Main prints and variant artist proofs

The 80 main prints and 20 hand-finished variants have separate publisher offers; the latter product is explicitly titled Variant Artist Proofs. The shared source photograph and overall composition do not make the finishing irrelevant: it is the announced distinction between the two configurations. Conversely, the existence of 20 finished variants does not turn the ordinary main edition into a run of 100 visually identical impressions.

Cultprint associated the release with the September 28, 2023 exhibition opening, but its product text does not establish an exact online sale opening. The exhibition date is useful context and should not be silently converted into a precise checkout event. Displayed currencies are also selectable, so a current converted dollar figure should not be assumed to be the original fixed retail price.

For a durable catalogue entry, retain both artist names, the main-versus-finished designation, support, size and number. Together those details distinguish the print from the other forms in its history while giving the underlying photograph its proper authorship.
