Miss America’s Favorite Son: a rifle becomes the favoured child
Fairey’s January 29, 2026 screenprint uses a maternal pose to challenge gun culture. The signed, numbered edition of 550 launched at US$65 with a portion of proceeds pledged to Change the Ref.
RELEASE RADAR HQMiss America’s Favorite Son places a rifle in the arms of a woman whose lowered gaze and close embrace suggest a cherished child. Shepard Fairey released the screenprint on January 29, 2026, through OBEY’s store at US$65. The official edition record specifies 24 × 18 inches, 80# cream Speckletone paper, a signature, numbering out of 550 and a Verisart digital certificate. It now records the release as sold out.
The title turns affection into an accusation
The composition’s argument depends on that tender pose. The weapon rises alongside the woman’s head, while her red-painted nails hold it close; a small American-flag motif appears on her ring. The upper-left inscription identifies the object as her favourite son. The surrounding decorative patterns and controlled facial expression make the affection appear settled and ordinary, which is precisely what gives the substitution its force.
In his release statement, Fairey identifies the Circle Jerks song Wild in the Streets as the title’s source. The borrowed question becomes a national-family metaphor: America’s attachment to guns is presented as favouritism with consequences for its children. This is the artist’s critique of gun culture. The image can communicate it through the relationship between figure and object, without requiring the viewer to have heard the song.
Fairey also identifies Manny and Patricia Oliver, whose son Joaquin was killed at Parkland, in explaining the release’s connection to Change the Ref. A portion of proceeds was pledged to the organisation. The announcement gives no percentage, so the edition’s price and size do not establish a donation total.
Two January prints, two uses of a national figure
It Can’t Happen Here provides a close comparison. Both prints were specified at the same dimensions, on the same paper, in numbered editions of 550 at US$65. That removes format and original price as distinguishing factors. Their political work happens in the figures: a shackled Statue of Liberty registers threatened freedom, while Miss America’s embrace presents danger as something willingly protected. The distinction matters when choosing a print for a collection focused on national symbolism; the figures assign very different kinds of responsibility.
The same-day Remember Hind Rajab offers another contrast. Its edition of 100 was released through WILLA at US$200, and its portrait identifies a particular child by name. Miss America instead personifies a country and makes the gun its favoured child. The comparison brings out the specificity of Fairey’s rhetorical choice here, rather than treating every political portrait as the same kind of testimony.
Keep the original sale record with the image
The January 27 announcement scheduled the launch for January 29 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time in its headline and limited orders to one per customer or household. For an impression encountered later, the edition number, documented paper, signature and accompanying certificate provide a more precise description than a listing that calls it only a gun-control poster. Neither the 550-print run nor the sold-out archive establishes a secondary-market price. The strongest collecting case rests on the unusually intimate visual language of the critique and the exact edition being offered.
