Modular Frequency: Fairey’s 2026 letterpress edition
The compact letterpress debuted at Subliminal Projects on February 28 before its March 5 online sale. One edition connects the two releases.
RELEASE RADAR HQModular Frequency is a Shepard Fairey letterpress edition of 300 introduced at Subliminal Projects on February 28, 2026, then offered online through Obey Giant on March 5. Its original price was $75. The two sale dates describe access to one edition, not a gallery edition followed by a separately numbered web edition. Obey’s archive records the print as sold out.
A small sheet arranged like a wall of signals
The composition is divided into unequal panels: a large, scarf-covered figure in a peaked cap occupies the upper left, while a narrow right-hand stack contains arrows, scales, concentric curves and patterned strips. A lotus-like flower sits in a circle lower down, crossed by red and cream geometric divisions. Black, red and the cream sheet provide the principal contrast. The design alternates recognizable symbols with pattern, so the eye moves between reading an image and following a repeated shape.
In the online-release statement, Fairey connects the work to decades of modular and geometric design within his practice and to the exhibition sharing its title. The print’s panel structure makes that relationship visible: it behaves like a compressed arrangement of related motifs rather than a single portrait surrounded by decoration. The face establishes an entry point, but the smaller units prevent it from monopolizing the page.
Letterpress, screenprint and exhibition are different references
This sheet measures 14¼ by 9½ inches and is printed on cream cotton paper with hand-deckled edges. The separately titled Modular Sound and Vision screenprint, also offered at the exhibition opening, measures 36 by 24 inches on cream Speckletone paper and has an edition of 500. Their shared exhibition context does not make them size variants of the same print. A collection record that abbreviates either to “Modular” risks confusing two distinct compositions, processes and edition structures.
That comparison also explains an ownership choice without making a quality ranking. The small letterpress supports close reading of the modules and presentation of the irregular sheet edge; the larger screenprint occupies substantially more wall area. The announcement identifies an Obey publishing chop at lower left and a Verisart digital certificate for the letterpress. Those details, along with its proportions and inscription, distinguish the physical issue more reliably than the exhibition name alone.
An AP photograph does not quantify proofs
The official letterpress image shows an AP inscription near the lower-left margin. It is an illustrative proof impression, while the sale description announces a numbered edition of 300. This photograph establishes neither the number of artist’s proofs nor that a buyer from the regular release received one. Anyone comparing an offered AP with a numbered copy should retain the actual inscription in the description instead of folding both into a single edition count.
The opening announcement specified 6 p.m. and the web announcement 10 a.m., using inconsistent winter PDT wording; the latter headline says Pacific time. The reliable chronology is February 28 in person, then March 5 online. No additional edition or restock should be inferred from that second opportunity to buy.
