Mr. Spray Letterpress: Fairey’s 2026 antiwar mascot

The July 16 edition translates Fairey’s Iraq-war-era Mr. Spray into a 13-by-10-inch letterpress on deckle-edged cotton paper.

Mr. Spray Letterpress returns a character Shepard Fairey says he developed during the Iraq war in a compact, materially specific 2026 edition. Released through Obey Giant on July 16 at 10 a.m. PDT for $65, it is a signed and numbered edition of 450. The artist’s archive records it as sold out. The collectible here is the 13-by-10-inch letterpress on cream cotton paper, not every earlier appearance or reproduction of the Mr. Spray character.

An advertising character selling an antiwar message

The image gives a spray can a face, arms, legs and striped shoes. Mr. Spray holds an Obey sticker while red marks fan outward from the nozzle; behind him, flowing Obey lettering borrows the friendliness of a product logo. A crossed-out “War” sign and the instruction “Make Art Not War” turn that commercial-style invitation toward a political purpose. The small scale of the figure and his self-assured expression keep the message playful rather than solemn.

That reading follows the artist’s stated references to graffiti, stencils and 1950s advertising characters. The borrowed salesmanship is the point: a mascot normally recommends consumption, while this one recommends making and circulating images. The Obey sticker in his hand makes him both a character in the campaign and an imagined participant distributing it. For a collector following Fairey’s self-referential imagery, that detail is more revealing than the antiwar slogan alone.

The edition lives in its paper and edges

Compared with the 24-by-18-inch cream Speckletone screenprints of the 2026 Defend Your Freedoms series, Mr. Spray is much smaller and uses a different process and support. The announced cotton paper has hand-deckled edges, and an Obey publishing chop sits at lower left. Those features make the sheet itself part of the object’s presentation. A frame treatment that exposes the edges can preserve that distinction, whereas a tight window covering the margins can hide the very features that identify this issue.

The official photograph shows the deckled sheet, lower-left chop and signature area, but a photograph does not establish the depth of the impression or the condition of another copy. For an offered impression, the numbered inscription, paper edge and full margins deserve separate photographs. An irregular deckle should not automatically be described as edge damage; a new tear extending into the sheet is a different condition question.

A returning image with a documented new issue

Fairey’s statement identifies the Iraq-war origin, but does not date a first Mr. Spray edition or claim this is the character’s first letterpress. The secure lineage is therefore a reused motif in a documented July 2026 issue. The release includes a Verisart digital certificate and identifies Fairey as signer; it does not quantify proofs or separately name a printer. Keeping the year and letterpress designation with the title prevents a broad character search from becoming a mistaken comparison between unlike objects.
