Social Distortion Born to Kill: the Fairey and Mike Ness signed print
The 550-copy screenprint pairs an aggressive leopard image with two documented signatures, linking Fairey’s artwork to Social Distortion’s Born to Kill project.
RELEASE RADAR HQTwo signatures distinguish the edition
Social Distortion Born to Kill was announced for September 17, 2026 at 10 a.m. PDT through Obey Giant. The 24-by-18-inch portrait-format screenprint uses 80# cream Speckletone paper and was priced at $75. Its numbered edition of 550 is signed by both Shepard Fairey and Mike Ness, with a Verisart digital certificate included. The second signature is a substantive edition feature, not an assumed attribute of every Fairey music print.
In the official announcement, Fairey says Ness invited him to create the cover artwork for Born to Kill. He places the project in the context of a long personal attachment to Social Distortion, beginning with hearing the band in 1985. This account establishes the collaboration’s relationship to the music; it does not mean that the print includes a record or any other album-format product.
An image that advances toward the viewer
The release photograph shows a snarling leopard rendered in saturated yellow and pink against black. The face occupies almost the entire printed field, with the band name across the top and the title compressed into the lower-right corner. The eyes, bared teeth and extended whiskers create a direct, confrontational address that leaves little room for detached observation.
The colour treatment heightens that effect rather than aiming at naturalism. Pink marks interrupt the yellow face and continue into the dark surround, making fur, shadow and speckled texture compete at the edges. The animal remains immediately legible, but the unexpected palette prevents it from becoming merely a wildlife illustration. The image works through exaggeration and compressed contrast.
The hierarchy is equally deliberate. The animal supplies the emotional force; the band name identifies the musical association; the small stacked title gives that force a verbal destination. Removing the typography would produce a different reading, while cropping tightly to the title would miss why this particular cover image has such physical presence.
The closest September comparison is This Mirror Weighs a Ton, Fairey’s Interpol screenprint. Both were $75, 24 by 18 inches and numbered to 550, but the Interpol edition documents Fairey’s signature alone and specifies true white paper. Born to Kill adds Ness’s signature on cream paper. Those differences make the autograph configuration and support more useful identifiers than price or edition size for someone assembling the two music collaborations.
Collecting the artwork rather than an implied bundle
The print is relevant to both Fairey and Social Distortion collections because the documented signatures connect the visual artist and the musician to the same sheet. The release’s visual energy also stands apart from a conventional musician portrait: the band is represented through an emblematic creature rather than through photographs of its members.
When comparing an offered copy, the material questions are therefore whether it is the stated screenprint and whether both signatures correspond to this edition’s documented configuration. A generic band poster or album sleeve bearing the same art is not equivalent. The 550 figure identifies the numbered run, without establishing additional proof quantities or the number of surviving copies. The announcement records the original release and price, not current inventory or a later market valuation.
