Spring Forth: Fairey’s January portrait of renewal

Spring Forth launched January 8, 2026, as a US$60 edition of 550. Its layered portrait and floral emblem turn Fairey’s New Year message into an invitation to act before spring arrives.

Spring Forth brought an appeal for renewal to Shepard Fairey’s January 2026 releases. It launched through OBEY’s store on January 8 at US$60, in a signed, numbered edition of 550. The announcement specifies a 24 × 18-inch screenprint on 80# cream Speckletone paper with a Verisart digital certificate. The print archive records the edition as sold out.

A fresh start without a clean slate

The face is interrupted by angled fields of red and blue-green, with patterned areas and drip-like marks around it. Beneath the chin, a pale flower sits inside a dark diamond. The portrait’s direct gaze gives the busy surface a point of stability, while the flower supplies a concentrated image of growth. These marks belong to the reproduced composition; their appearance alone does not establish that individual impressions were hand-painted or uniquely distressed.

The combination makes renewal look active and unfinished. The face remains legible through overlapping shapes rather than occupying an untouched background. Read alongside Fairey’s statement, the image suggests that a new beginning can be built within existing conditions. That is an interpretation of the composition, not a claim about the model’s identity or the print’s production sequence.

Fairey’s January 6 message explicitly rejects waiting for the season itself before beginning work toward a desired future. The January 8 release is integral to that thought: the title operates as an instruction issued in winter. The archive card’s January 28 date can obscure this timing, but the dated sales announcement establishes the earlier launch. It advertised 10 a.m. Pacific Time in the headline, with one print allowed per customer or household.

Renewal and restraint in the same format

Two weeks later, It Can’t Happen Here used the same paper, sheet dimensions and edition size for a shackled Statue of Liberty. The visual relationship is revealing: Spring Forth builds energy through a forward-facing portrait and intersecting colour, while Liberty’s hands and chains concentrate attention on constraint. Seen together, the January works offer two responses to conditions the artist wants to change: cultivation and warning.

Their material parity also clarifies the US$5 difference in original price. Spring Forth was US$60 and It Can’t Happen Here US$65, but the published specifications do not identify an enlarged format or smaller edition behind the higher price. That leaves subject and composition as the meaningful choices for someone comparing the two works, rather than an unsupported assumption that the dearer print occupies a higher production tier.

Surface effects and the editioned object

Spring Forth’s layered appearance makes the distinction between image and object particularly important. A listing that describes paint drips should explain whether it means the printed design or separately documented hand-finishing. The official medium is screenprint, and no hand-finished variant is identified in the release announcement. Record the full title, 550-edition numbering and signature with the certificate, keeping any claim about an individual impression’s added treatment separate. The picture’s restless surface is central to its meaning; it should not become an invented rarity claim.
