The Interpol release

This Mirror Weighs a Ton was released through Obey Giant on September 10, 2026 at 10 a.m. PDT. The portrait-format screenprint measures 24 inches high by 18 inches wide, with a numbered edition of 550 signed by Shepard Fairey. Its announced price was $75, and the release included a Verisart digital certificate. The specified support is 80# true white Speckletone paper, a detail that distinguishes it from the cream-paper specifications common to several adjacent Fairey releases.

The official announcement describes a collaboration with Interpol around surveillance. Fairey places it in a relationship that included work for Antics in 2004 and El Pintor in 2014. Those earlier projects establish a continuing artistic association; this record concerns the specific This Mirror Weighs a Ton screenprint and does not treat the earlier works as variants of it.

An eye that behaves like a camera

The exact release photograph shows two stacked, high-contrast eye images. Each iris contains curved forms resembling a camera aperture. Red text runs down the surrounding black field, and a red Interpol signature-style wordmark anchors the bottom. The mechanical intervention changes the eye from a familiar sign of human attention into something that seems designed to record.

The repeated eye does more than double the subject. Stacking creates a sequence, as though one is seeing successive frames or duplicated surveillance feeds. The grainy black-and-white treatment keeps the skin recognizably physical, while the aperture-like centre introduces a sharply organised machine element. That uneasy combination makes the image’s surveillance premise visible without requiring a literal security camera in the frame.

The red lettering supplies a controlled interruption rather than a full competing image. It gives the surrounding black space a reading path, yet the eye keeps pulling attention back toward the centre. The viewer is looking at an object whose dominant subject is looking back, a reciprocal structure that makes the album-related theme particularly suited to a print on a wall.

Social Distortion Born to Kill, released a week later, shares this print’s $75 issue price, 550-copy edition and 24-by-18-inch dimensions. Its cream paper and Fairey–Mike Ness signatures differ from the true white paper and Fairey-only signature here. Interpol’s collaboration credit therefore describes the artwork’s relationship to the band; it does not make this the same kind of dual-autograph object. The common size permits a paired display, while the paper specifications should remain separately documented.

What the edition contributes

Fairey’s statement explicitly links the work to the uncertain boundary between organic life and mechanisms of observation. The print’s interest lies in how directly it joins that idea to a repeatable graphic device. Its serial arrangement is distinct from a single promotional portrait of a band or a simple reproduction of band lettering.

The documented edition is signed by Fairey; the source does not claim signatures from Interpol’s members. That separates collaboration credit from physical autograph configuration. Collectors should also retain the true white paper specification even though lighting in a marketing photograph can make a margin appear warmer. The image alone should not override the announced material. The issue price and September sale are historical facts, while current stock, proof quantities and secondary transactions remain separate questions.
