Shepard Fairey’s ArtForFreedom campaign reached the public through free digital files, numbered screenprints and locally printed giveaway posters in 2026. Its three subjects address freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly. For collectors, the important distinction is how a particular sheet was produced and distributed. An authorised campaign image does not, by itself, make every printed copy part of the numbered Obey Giant edition.

Three subjects, several ways to participate

The June 22 campaign announcement introduced the collaboration with Unite in Advance and invited people to download and share the images. Speech uses the Statue of Liberty and a megaphone; Press combines a raised fist holding a pen with printing machinery; Assembly refers to the collective presence associated with the March on Washington. Across the three, a shared visual vocabulary ties individual expression, publication and gathering together.

That common identity made the series suitable for circulation beyond an art sale. By July 10, Obey Giant was directing Southern California readers to Monster Media in Riverside for free posters. The announcement also invited other print shops to use the campaign artwork for their communities. Its production photograph shows all three compositions on printed sheets being trimmed. It establishes physical production of each subject, without establishing a single fixed edition shared by every participating printer.

What the Riverside evidence establishes

Monster Media’s historical pickup offer was at 1515 Marlborough Avenue, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., while supplies lasted. July 10 is the date by which that offer was publicly documented; it is not evidence of the first day a poster was printed or collected. Nor does the announcement establish present availability, quantities by subject or the number of print runs.

The photograph provides a more useful distinction than simply labelling the posters free. It shows physical campaign production, rather than only a digital mock-up. Nevertheless, the image cannot establish the finished dimensions, paper weight, printing process or signature arrangements. A recipient’s dated account of collection identifies a local distribution context; a downloaded file printed elsewhere has a different production history even when the artwork looks the same.

Separate the community posters from the edition of 400

The June 25 screenprint offer specified 400 numbered impressions of each subject, signed by Fairey, on 80-pound cream Speckletone paper at 24 by 18 inches. The original price was $65 per print and the offer included Verisart digital certificates. None of those edition, signature or certificate terms should be copied onto a Monster Media poster solely because it carries the same composition.

For an individual sheet, an edition inscription and original sale documentation answer a different question from a community pickup record. The former can support membership in the numbered issue; the latter records the campaign’s local circulation. Keeping both histories visible allows a collection to document how Fairey’s images travelled, without turning a free public poster into an undocumented limited edition or treating local participation as artist-signed provenance.
