Shepard Fairey’s Projection Mirror circulated in three documented physical channels during 2026: February numbered screenprints, March free protest posters and April signed offsets. The two recurring subjects, Paid Agitator and Domestic Terrorist, share an officer-and-baton image but need more than a title to identify an individual copy. Most importantly, the April sale was connected to stock retained from the March distribution. Three routes to an audience do not necessarily mean three separately printed editions.

The March giveaway belongs in the history

The March 26 announcement offered both posters for collection at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles on March 27 and 28, ahead of the No Kings march. It also directed people unable to collect a physical poster to downloadable files. Those were different ways to obtain an image: a poster supplied at the gallery and a reproduction printed from a file should retain different provenance descriptions.

The giveaway photograph shows the two physical sheets together, with red titles above the same uniformed figure. It is useful evidence of the offered subjects, but cannot establish every copy’s signature, exact paper or production method. For someone documenting a poster collected that weekend, a dated pickup account or contemporaneous photograph supplies distribution history that the image alone cannot.

April was a signed allocation from retained stock

In the April 14 announcement, Fairey reported that hundreds had picked up the posters and explained that copies had been set aside, with signed versions subsequently offered for sale. The listed April objects were 24-by-18-inch gloss-finished offset lithographs on 12-point cover paper, priced at $25 each. Their advertised sale was April 16 at 10 a.m. PDT.

That account links the free distribution and signed offer through underlying stock. It does not establish the total print run, the number signed, or that every March recipient received an unsigned sheet. A careful catalogue can distinguish a March giveaway copy with no documented signature from a signed April purchase without presenting the latter as proof of an entirely new printing. A later signature would also need its own supporting history.

What distinguishes the February screenprints

The February screenprint release specified editions of 300 per subject, cream Speckletone paper, numbering and Verisart certificates, at $70 each. It shared the nominal 24-by-18-inch dimensions with the April offset offer. Size and a Fairey signature therefore cannot distinguish the two. Medium, paper, edition inscription and original purchase documentation are the more informative comparison.

This also changes how pairs should be described. A matching-number screenprint pair requires evidence of both edition numbers; two free posters collected together instead document participation in the same distribution. Both histories are worth preserving, but one does not confer the other’s numbering or certificate terms. The wider downloadable series included additional titles, which should not be assumed to have been physically supplied at the March pickup simply because their files were available.
