Modular Frequency
Eighteen new mixed-media works use geometric organization to combine portraits, symbols, text and themes of peace, justice, and environmental responsibility. The presentation also includes other distinct artwork formats.
Modular Frequency presented eighteen new mixed-media works by Shepard Fairey at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles from February 28 through April 11, 2026. The gallery framed the exhibition around the organization of images, symbols, and text into geometric compositions. Its emphasis was on how an abundance of visual information can become a deliberate structure rather than an undifferentiated stream.
The artist's account broadens the material scope beyond a single format. Canvas paintings, unique works on paper, retired stencils, prints on wood, mono-engravings, and hand-painted multiples appear in the exhibition description. These categories should be retained rather than compressed into a generic print show. They point to different relationships between a repeatable image and the physical object on which it appears.
The modular idea offers a way to connect those material differences. A module can be repeated without making the entire composition repetitive: its meaning depends on its position, scale, and relationship to neighboring elements. A portrait next to a symbol does different work from either element standing alone. The exhibition's stated combination of imagery and text invites viewers to consider those relationships as part of the image's argument, not merely as decorative framing.
This also provides a useful distinction between visual order and uncomplicated meaning. Geometric organization can make a composition easier to grasp while bringing together subjects that remain politically or emotionally difficult. Peace, justice, and environmental responsibility, identified in the gallery's description, are not interchangeable slogans simply because they share a design system. A consistent structure can instead make differences among the subjects more visible.
Three editions made the exhibition’s connection to collectable prints explicit. Fairey announced Dreams of Peace and Modular Sound and Vision, both 36-by-24-inch screen prints in editions of 500, and a smaller Modular Frequency letterpress in an edition of 300. All were offered at the February 28 opening. The letterpress used cream cotton paper with hand-deckled edges; the two screen prints used cream Speckletone. These differences provide a concrete comparison within the project: the same organizing interest in rhythm and pattern moved between a relatively intimate sheet and a larger poster format. The paper and printing methods also make each edition a distinct material treatment, rather than simply a differently titled souvenir of the show.
