AirPods 5: $129 and $149 model differences

AirPods 5 launched September 18, 2026 in the US. Apple lists the USB-C Charging Case model at $129 and the Wireless Charging Case model at $149. Both include active noise cancellation.

Configuration differences

The extra $20 adds Qi and Apple Watch case charging, a Find My case speaker, volume swipe and higher rated ANC battery life: up to five hours / 22 with the case, versus four / 20 for the $129 model. Both use H2, an open-ear design and IP57 protection. Live Translation and Siri AI have additional device, software, language and region requirements; basic Bluetooth audio works with feature limitations outside Apple’s ecosystem.

Collector context

AirPods 5 change Apple’s open-ear lineup less by inventing a new shape than by moving Active Noise Cancellation into the baseline product. Apple now includes ANC on both the $129 AirPods 5 and the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, and says the new acoustic architecture can block up to 1.5 times more noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. That makes the fifth generation a different value proposition from the previous split, where ANC itself helped define the higher tier.

Independent testing also puts Apple’s ANC claim in the right context. RTINGS tested the Wireless Charging Case version and notes that the open fit still cannot isolate low-frequency noise as effectively as a sealed in-ear design such as AirPods Pro 3. SoundGuys likewise found meaningfully improved cancellation versus AirPods 4, while emphasizing that fit changes the result because there is no silicone tip sealing the ear canal. That makes AirPods 5 most interesting for listeners who specifically prefer Apple’s open-ear shape but previously had to accept weaker isolation or pay more for the ANC version.

The software features have their own boundaries. Apple lists Live Translation and Siri AI, but their usefulness depends on the paired Apple device, current operating-system support, language and region. Basic Bluetooth listening works beyond Apple hardware, while the deeper ecosystem features do not transfer wholesale. The fifth generation therefore remains most differentiated when used inside Apple’s device ecosystem rather than as a platform-neutral pair of earbuds.
