Pocket Aluminum Noir changes the enclosure, not the cartridge platform

The July 2024 limited edition uses a grey anodized aluminum body and a $499.99 original price; Noir and Black are separate finishes.

The Analogue Pocket Aluminum Noir edition takes the familiar handheld into a different material category. Analogue describes the enclosure as machined from solid billet 6061 aluminum, with an anodized finish. The Aluminum collection contains four named versions: Natural, Noir, Black and Indigo. Noir is the grey-toned option shown in the official product photography. It should not be silently merged with Black just because the word “noir” can mean black in another context.

The original announcement set the sale for July 15, 2024 at 8 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, at $499.99, with shipping announced for July 17. Analogue’s press sheet repeats the sale and planned shipment details. These are different dates: one opened ordering, while the other described intended dispatch. Neither proves when a particular buyer received a unit. The Noir store listing remains identifiable and is marked sold out at the latest check.

The material is the edition’s central difference from ordinary Pocket hardware. Earlier Transparent and Classic limited editions expressed their identity mainly through enclosure color and appearance; the Aluminum edition specifies a machined metal enclosure. That gives a collector a clear construction-based reason to compare it separately. It does not, however, establish faster game execution, better battery life or greater damage resistance. Those would require relevant specifications or testing beyond a material description.

The underlying Pocket family plays original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges, using a 3.5-inch display with a 1600×1440 resolution. Analogue also supports additional cartridge systems through separately sold adapters. Compared with Analogue 3D’s living-room N64 role, Pocket is a handheld built around a different library and its own software ecosystem. A collection of N64 cartridges therefore does not become compatible simply because both devices share the Analogue name and FPGA approach.

The Noir listing identifies the handheld and a USB-C cable as its package. The television Dock and cartridge adapters are separate accessories rather than implied parts of this expensive edition. For someone building a complete usable setup, the console price is only one part of the comparison: the required accessories depend on which cartridges and display arrangement they intend to use. For someone collecting the original object, the exact finish and included cable are the more immediate identity checks.

Analogue labels the Aluminum products limited editions, and its published terminology describes that category as a single production run. The inspected sources do not state a production quantity for Noir or for the four finishes combined. The sound collecting case is the documented metal construction, precise finish identity and original release history. An old stock-notification form does not establish another run, and a premium original price does not by itself predict future resale value.
