James Jean’s Masters of the Universe: floral heroes, coral villains

Two articulated rider-and-steed sets and a sixteen-portrait paper set carry Jean’s contrasting designs across objects, packaging and illustration.

James Jean’s Masters of the Universe collaboration turns the rivalry between He-Man and Skeletor into a contrast between flowering growth and branching coral. Mattel Creations launched two rider-and-steed sets and a related poster-and-sticker set on 24 March 2026. The three products share an illustrated world, but offer different ways of encountering it: articulated objects, packaging designed as a paired composition, and a flat arrangement of sixteen character portraits. Mattel’s collaboration introduction connects the project to the animation and comics Jean enjoyed when younger.

Floral armour and coral branches

The Floral He-Man and Battle Cat set uses pale jade-like armour, flowers and gold accents. Mattel describes the colour and plant forms as expressions of harmony and goodness. In the official product photograph, rounded petals gather around the shield, helmet and cat’s face; the decorative growth changes the silhouette of both rider and mount. The familiar weapons remain, but their surfaces belong to the same botanical treatment rather than appearing as unrelated accessories.

The matching Coral Skeletor and Panthor set moves toward deep red and angular branching. Its coral extensions spread beyond the armour and cat’s helmet, creating a more jagged outline than the floral pair. Mattel explicitly links this red treatment to Skeletor’s rage. Read together, the sets give the opposing characters different visual rhythms as well as different colours: rounded clusters on one side, reaching forks on the other. That contrast is visible in the exact product images and is central to Jean’s redesign.

Both humanoid figures are listed at six inches tall with fourteen points of articulation. Mattel lists each cat at approximately seven inches tall with twelve points; those are the manufacturer’s height labels, not measurements of the packaged sets. He-Man’s equipment includes his Sword of Power, shield and battle axe, while Skeletor carries a Havoc Staff and sword. The separate product identifiers, JMG93 and JLN02, help distinguish the two sets even when a seller offers them together. Floral set; Coral set.

A composition that continues onto paper

The window boxes are designed for paired display. Mattel identifies Leonardo da Vinci’s Battle of Anghiari as a compositional reference and says Jean’s artwork extends across the packaging and inserts. For someone comparing boxed and loose examples, that makes the packaging part of the documented presentation: a loose figure set retains the sculptural redesign but loses the larger paired arrangement.

The JWB79 poster-and-sticker set develops the faces used inside those sleeves. Its eighteen-by-twenty-four-inch poster places sixteen portraits on premium uncoated linen-finish paper. The accompanying ten-by-eight-inch vinyl liner carries two-inch kiss-cut stickers. In the official image, the poster gives the faces a measured grid and ample pale space, while the sticker sheet gathers them against a more brightly patterned field. Neither format should be confused with the three-dimensional figures or described as a signed fine-art print without supporting evidence. Poster and sticker set.

On 9 October, the official US-dollar listings marked the figure sets in stock at $100 each and the poster-and-sticker set at $50. Those are current offers, not independently verified original issue prices. The inspected pages do not state numbered edition sizes or artist signatures. Purchase limits concern ordering quantities and do not establish how many objects were made.
