Separate the base model from the chosen configuration

Apple’s starting price describes its entry configuration. Mac Studio M5 Ultra starts at US $5,499, while the late-October 512GB option requires the 36-core CPU / 80-core GPU; its configured price and exact release day remain unannounced. Do not turn “late October” into an invented calendar day.

For iPhone 18 Pro, compare the 6.3-inch model separately from Pro Max and choose storage explicitly. For Apple Watch Series 12, case material, size label, connectivity and band affect the offer. Ceramic dimensions need the technical specifications rather than assumptions from an aluminum model.

Compare the feature that changes the purchase

Both AirPods 5 models have ANC. The $20 step from $129 to $149 buys the Wireless Charging Case tier’s charging, Find My, volume-control and rated battery differences. For Mac Studio, M5 Ultra’s bandwidth changes while the 512GB maximum itself already existed with M3 Ultra.

Keep hardware and software dates separate

An available device does not establish that every announced feature has shipped. Check required phone or computer, operating system, language and region for the specific feature. Store availability and delivery estimates also depend on the exact configuration and location.

Collector context

For video, capacity and recording eligibility separate cleanly. Apple’s ProRes reference for iPhone 17 Pro and earlier supported models requires external storage for 4K120 ProRes on 17 Pro and 16 Pro, with at least 440MB/s write speed. A larger internal storage option does not remove that requirement. For that exact recording mode, the meaningful purchase is a suitable recording path, not simply the largest phone capacity. Conversely, more internal space can address library size without changing the camera’s physical behavior.

The iPhone 18 Pro provides the other side of the distinction. Its lens has a physical variable aperture; extra storage does not create that capability on an older phone. Software determines how the control is used: Final Cut Camera 2.4 added aperture-priority and shutter-priority modes after the phone’s launch. Hardware release and app update can therefore mark different moments in the same filming setup’s development.

On Mac, memory capacity is also different from storage. Apple’s M1 Ultra architecture explanation describes one memory pool accessible to CPU, GPU and Neural Engine. Its M3 Ultra introduction explains why a large pool matters to graphics-heavy work such as complex 3D scenes and local AI. A larger SSD holds more project files; it does not enlarge that working pool. The useful comparison is the workload’s active memory needs first, then the time needed to process it. Those are separate constraints, which the M5 Ultra report illustrates with configuration-specific tests.

Watch features require a similar distinction between appearance and function. Apple’s Series 12 technical page lists the same S11 chip and Health Sensing System across its case materials, while distinguishing their glass and physical dimensions. Ceramic is not a higher sensing tier. A different boundary applies to Readiness: Apple names Series 12 and Ultra 4 and requires an overnight baseline. Paying for a finish and obtaining a sensor-dependent feature are different decisions.
